Susan P. Willman, MD

photo-dr-willman-headshotDr. Willman was the first female physician in the bay area with a private practice specializing in Assisted Reproductive Technology. She began her practice in 1992 as a solo practitioner and a single mother. In 1999, she joined the Reproductive Science Center of the Bay Area as a full partner.

Focusing on fertility and fertility preservation, Dr. Willman is a Reproductive Endocrinologist (REI). As an REI, not only does she do minimally invasive surgery, but she also looks at the whole picture, including male factor infertility, ovarian reserve and endocrine factors.

In investigating all aspects of a patients’ fertility, Dr. Willman will order tests and create a treatment plan even following surgery to help patients conceive. With Dr. Willman, treatment doesn’t necessarily stop after surgery. She will help patients to conceive beyond this as well.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Dr. Willman received her bachelor degree summa cum laude and her medical degree cum laude from St. Louis University School of Medicine and was in the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Nu. Her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology was at the University of Texas Southwestern where she received an award for Resident’s Prize paper for her work in diabetes in pregnancy.

She then completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at UCSF. She received an award in 2004 at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine for her video presentation of use of sonography as an adjuvant to operative hysteroscopy. She was a primary investigator in a recent study on time lapse imaging of early embryo development as a tool for embryo selection in IVF.

Dr. Willman belongs to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the European Society for Human Reproduction, the Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy. She attends medical meetings both in the USA and abroad, recognizing that the field of medicine is global and that different view points from different societies enhance the field of medicine.

Her outside interests include hiking, skiing and traveling. She is married with a merged family of three children and from personal experience understands the challenges of building a family in a non-traditional way.
